Cards finish season with losses, look to playoffs

---- — SCHENECTADY — After a 3-1 start to the weekend, the Plattsburgh State softball team looked like it would be hot heading into this week’s SUNY Athletic Conference playoffs.

But Sunday the Cardinals cooled off a bit.

Plattsburgh dropped a pair of non-conference games to Ithaca and Union, 6-4 and 6-2, respectively.

Both games followed the same trend. Plattsburgh went down early, worked its way back but couldn’t finish it off.

In the Ithaca game, the Bombers jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning. Four consecutive hits surrendered by Plattsburgh starter Ashley Marshall helped set up the big inning.

After the first, though, Marshall settled down, keeping Ithaca off the board until the seventh inning.

Plattsburgh took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning with a pair of RBI from Megan Price and Samantha Capobianco, who homered to center field.

The Cardinals held the lead until the seventh when the first batter up reached on an error. Marshall (19-5) then gave up a hit before surrendering a walk-off home run to Jennifer Biondi.

Laura Quicker (4-2) picked up the win for the Bombers.

The second game started much the same, this time with Plattsburgh starter Kristin Fisher giving up two runs in the first inning.

The Cardinals answered in the third inning when Emily McDonagh drove in two runs with a single to left field.

But like the first game, Plattsburgh gave up the winning run in the final inning. Union struck for four runs and handed Fisher (0-2) her second loss of the year.

“They took advantage of a couple of defensive mishaps on our part,” Plattsburgh coach Stephanie Zweig said.

Capobianco and Brianna Clarke both finished with four hits on the day for the Cardinals, who will face Geneseo in the SUNYAC playoffs Thursday.

“I’m just looking forward to getting into postseason play,” Zweig said. “We can take a lot away from today that we can bring into next weekend.”
