WATERTOWN — It hasn’t been the most ideal of starts for the Clinton Community baseball team.
The Cougars (2-7) surrendered 33 runs in 10 innings, dropping consecutive contests to Jefferson Community College Saturday afternoon 13-7 and 20-1.
“(Saturday) didn’t go too well,” Clinton coach Tom Neale said. “We didn’t field the ball well. We played hard, but we made errors in the field, and they did a good job capitalizing”
In game one, the Cougars allowed six runs in the bottom of the first inning.
“We hurt ourselves badly with a bunch of runs at the outset,” Neale said. “We had a miscue with one out, and the floodgates opened.”
Kristian Sherman hit the team’s lone extra-base hit, a double.
Joshua Amann was credited with win on the mound for the Cannoneers (14-11), pitching six innings and giving up three runs. Russell Merrill was tagged with the loss.
Jefferson finished with 13 runs on 12 hits with two errors, while Clinton accounted for seven runs on eight hits and seven errors.
In game two, pitching woes proved to plague the Cougars again.
Fourteen runs in the bottom of the second inning helped the Cannoneers jump out to a commanding 16-run lead.
“We had a player come in who doesn’t pitch a lot and gave him a chance,” Neale said. “Everyone played hard. It wasn’t an effort issue. We just didn’t play well.”
Jordan Delaney picked up the win for Jefferson with Joe Tolosky taking the loss.
The Cannoneers belted 20 runs on 12 hits in just four innings at the plate.
Chris Roenbeck, though, belted a home run in the first inning, which was one of six Cougars hits in the game.
