Plattsburgh State LAX knocks off Brockport

BROCKPORT — Four Cardinals scored two goals apiece as the nationally ranked No. 18 Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team defeated Brockport, 9-5, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 11-3 on the year, tying the program high in wins set in 2010 and 2012. Plattsburgh State also sits in second place in the SUNYAC standings with a 3-1 record in the league.

The Golden Eagles drop to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Brendan Damm opened the scoring at the 9:46 mark of the first with an unassisted goal to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead, but Brockport tied it up at 6:41 with a goal by Steve Brissette. Later in the quarter, Plattsburgh State’s Tim Lawrence scored two goals in a 40-second span to make it a 3-1 game at the end of the first.

Brockport’s Jesse Elliott and John Countryman scored back-to-back goals early in the second quarter to tie it up at three. The Cardinals regained the lead at the 11:57 mark with a goal by Tom Duggan before Joey Kramer added another at 8:03 to give Plattsburgh State a 5-3 lead at the half.

Damm scored his second of the day at 11:52 of the third, bringing his season total to 30 goals. Brockport answered back at 4:36 on Clifton Jackson’s goal, but the Cardinals maintained a two-goal lead heading into the final quarter.

Kramer and Anthony Pafundi recorded the first two goals of the final stanza before Brockport’s Bryon Palmer tallied his third of the year at 4:46, cutting the Plattsburgh State lead to 8-5. Duggan rounded out the scoring with 1:57 left in the game with a man-up goal from Brett McClelland.

Lawrence, Kramer and Duggan each scored two goals for the Cardinals. Damm contributed two goals and an assist while McClelland added three helpers. Nick Travers won 11-of-17 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 13 ground balls. Defensively, the Cardinals caused 16 turnovers with Ryan Phillips leading the way with three.
