Second half lifts Saints past Bobcats

---- — PAUL SMITHS — North Country Community College men’s basketball team received a bit of a scare from its rival from the Yankee Small College Conference in Paul Smith’s before pulling ahead in the second half for a 70-61 victory Monday.

Brody Douglass led the charge with 16 points for the Saints, while Steve Carder added 15 points and 14 rebounds. Jared Heden tossed in 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds, and Steven Poulter finished with 13 points.

“(Paul Smith’s coach) Joe (Akey) being a former player I am extremely proud of how hard he got his kids to play,” North Country coach Chad LaDue said. “They gave us everything we could handle.

“It was a very physical game and they did a nice job getting us out of sync. We were a second slow on our ball reversals and did a nice job holding us to four 3-pointers.”

The Bobcats (2-3) held a 31-30 lead at the half, but North Country (5-0) outscored them 40-30 during the second half.

“Sometimes you don’t have your best,” LaDue said. “But, I was happy we were able to gut one out.”

Shiva Senthil, who knocked down six 3-pointers, finished with a game-high 19 points for Paul Smith’s. Devon Carr added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Bobcats, while Alex Medina finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Paul Smith’s is back in action against Southern Maine Community College Friday at 7 p.m. The Saints travel to Herkimer Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest.
