POTSDAM — Opponents have felt the wrath of the Chazy boys’ soccer team this season.
Add Section X champion Heuvelton to the list.
Brandon Laurin scored three goals and assisted on another Saturday as the Eagles rolled to a 7-0 victory for a NYSPHSAA Class D regional championship at Potsdam High School.
With the win, Chazy (19-0-1) advances to yet another Final Four where it will play Section III champion Poland, which is also unbeaten, in Saturday’s 12:30 p.m. state semifinals in Middletown.
“This is just as good as the first time,” said Laurin. “We have some newer kids on the team this year and everybody has been in 100 percent.
“Our team is like a family — we all get along and there are no arguments. We’re playing very well right now, but Poland will test us.”
“We’re happy to move on,” said Chazy coach Rob McAuliffe. “It was nice to get everyone in today so they can feel part of this.”
The Bulldogs, who played three one-goal games while winning the Section X title, were never able to muster much of an offensive attack against the Eagles.
Chazy grabbed the lead for good at 14:11 of the first half when Laurin took a pass from Josh Barriere and sent a bullet into the upper corner of the net.
“We didn’t play our best soccer at the start of the game and were frustrated a little,” said McAuliffe. “But once we scored our first goal, we began to possess the ball better and were able to generate a lot of chances.”
A corner kick and ensuing scramble resulted in the Eagles’ second goal at the 27:55 mark when Nathan Reynolds headed the ball into the net from close range.
It became 3-0 at 29:20 as David Poitras’ cross was headed into the net by Laurin.
