Clinton men fall, women win

---- — PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton Community College men’s basketball team stayed with a tough, physical Jefferson Community College for most of the game, but fell 80-72 in men’s college basketball.

Derrick Williams scored a game-high 27 points to lead the way for the Cannoneers. Samuel Durodola added 17 points, while Andrew McNitt tossed in 16.

“We just had very little energy on the defensive end,” Cougars coach Kevin Daugherty said. “It was our home opener and we didn’t come to play.

“They constantly got in the lane with the ball with very little resistance from us. We gave them second and third chances.”

Despite the lapses in defense, Clinton found itself trailing by just one with two minutes to go, but couldn’t get any closer.

Kyree Hull had another superb game for the Cougars with 25 points and six rebounds. Mykell Krecko chipped in with 17 points and six blocks, but fouled out for the second straight game. Kyle LaPoint added 10 points, while Jamie Davison finished with seven assists and three steals.

“We are a very young team, but we’re talented,” Daugherty said. “We can trade baskets with anyone. I see the promise.

“It’s a long season; 27 more games to come.”

The Cougars host Paul Smith’s at 7 p.m. Thursday.
