PLATTSBURGH — After a back-and-forth opening two sets, Voorheesville capitalized on its serving to complete a three-set sweep against AuSable Valley in the Class C sub-regional volleyball finals Tuesday at Plattsburgh High School. The Black Birds won with set scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-12.

“Our serving was really aggressive throughout the whole match,” Voorheesville coach Ashley Swint said. “That’s been one of our big strengths all season and it helped again today.”

Tori Hargove served up 11 points on the day for Voorheesville, including a string of three in a row toward the end of the third set. Libby Bjork dished out 17 assists as the Black Birds used smooth ball movement to set up spikes. Mariel McGinnies led the team with eight kills.

On the other side of the net, AuSable Valley’s Miranda Sheffer held strong in the backcourt and led the Patriots with 11 digs. Like Voorheesville, AuSable Valley relied on all its players to score.

“I was so proud of our effort from everyone,” AuSable Valley coach Sandy Hoey said. “We’ve been working on the mental part of the game just as much as the physical part.”

During the second set, the Patriots trailed 13-7 and rallied to take the lead at 14-13. In that stretch, Alexandra Lincoln picked up five service points. Both teams then traded the lead with the Black Birds reeling off four straight points to win the

set 25-19.

AuSable Valley took the initial third set lead, but Voorheesville took control and posted eight unanswered points to take the match.

“We’re a tough team to beat,” Swint said. “Our girls have been playing together for awhile and that showed in how well they know each other on the court.”

The Black Birds improve to 20-0 on the season and advance to the regional finals at SUNY Canton this Saturday at noon. AuSable Valley, however, ends its season at 16-3, a marked improvement from last year’s squad that finished below .500, Hoey said.

“Our effort was great the whole season,” Hoey said. “We say that teams win championships, not individuals and we’ve got a good group returning next year.”
