Cardinals bombard Cougars in big win

---- — PLATTSBURGH — If shots on goal were any indication of Sunday’s outcome, the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team would have been an odds-on-favorite.

The No. 2-ranked Cardinals (3-0-1, 2-0) fired the third highest shot total in program history (81) while holding Chatham University to six in a 10-0 victory to conclude a four-point ECAC West weekend.

“I thought we did a much better job of getting the second and third opportunities and getting more traffic in front of the goalie,” Plattsburgh State head coach Kevin Houle said. “I’d be a little more concerned if we didn’t finish.”

Similar to yesterday’s 5-0 win, the Cardinals peppered Cougar (0-2, 0-2) goaltender Megan Buchanan with 29 shots in the first period, but concluded the opening stanza with just two markers.

“Their goalie played very well, but we came out the way we wanted to come out with a lot of pressure on them and pucks on net,” Houle said. “Three or four (goals) would have been nice, but if we didn’t score during that first period, we would’ve become a little frustrated. I was happy with the intensity and how we moved the puck.”

Following second-period goals from Allison Era, Breanne Bennett and Jenny Kistner, the Cardinals closed out the game with five goals in the third period.

“It’s good to score some goals and get that confidence, but as a team we need to realize that (Tuesday night’s) game against Potsdam is going to be a lot different,” Houle said. “When they put their second goalie in, it certainly made a difference, but it was nice to see intensity throughout.”

Defenseman Era garnered a hat trick, while Kistner finished the afternoon with two goals.

“Those kids are big-time performers for us,” Houle said. “(Era) is one of the defensemen in the country. We moved her up at forward a little bit (Sunday) because she has great offensive instincts.”

Ally Ross made her second-straight start in net for Plattsburgh State, fending off six shots for the win. Buchanan recorded 50 saves in the losing effort.

The Cardinals continue ECAC West play Tuesday night at the Plattsburgh State Field House against Potsdam State at 7 p.m.
