PLATTSBURGH — Meron’s Expos pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning in the second game Sunday to rally for a rain-shortened 5-4 victory over the Fourth Ward A’s in the final weekend of regular season play in the Champlain Valley Baseball League.
The A’s recorded a 4-3 win in the opener and the second contest, which was called after 4½ innings, ended up determining the second seed in the upcoming playoffs, which begin this coming weekend.
The Lyon Mountain Miners (11-2) are the top seed and the Expos (8-6) the second seed. They will get byes in the opening round of the playoffs.
Sunday’s opening-round quarterfinals will feature two games at South Acres Field. The first will have fourth-seeded Fourth Ward A’s hosting the fifth-seeded Peabody’s Padres at 11 a.m., followed by the third-seeded Fourth Cardinals hosting the sixth-seeded Fourth Ward Timberjaxx at 3 p.m. The opening round is single elimination and seven innings in regulation.
In the second game between the A’s and Expos, Joe Kirkpatrick hit a grand slam in the first inning to give the A’s a 4-0 lead.
The Expos cut their deficit to 4-3 after three. In the fourth, Mike Bergman singled and two walks loaded the bases, with nobody out. Force outs at the plate resulted in two outs before Billy Davis’ two-run infield hit gave the Expos the win.
Mark Passino led Meron’s with two doubles and two RBI, while Davis added a single, double and three RBI. Bergman was the winning pitcher.
In the opener, Kirkpatrick struck out five in going the distance for the win and also helped himself at the plate with two singles. Phil McGee chipped in with a run-scoring double.
Davis, who took the loss, went three-for-three, including two doubles and two RBI. Paul Bruno and Passino each doubled, with Passino driving in a run.
