PLATTSBURGH — Meron’s Expos pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning in the second game Sunday to rally for a rain-shortened 5-4 victory over the Fourth Ward A’s in the final weekend of regular season play in the Champlain Valley Baseball League.
The A’s recorded a 4-3 win in the opener and the second contest, which was called after 4½ innings, ended up determining the second seed in the upcoming playoffs, which begin this coming weekend.
The Lyon Mountain Miners (11-2) are the top seed and the Expos (8-6) the second seed. They will get byes in the opening round of the playoffs.
Sunday’s opening-round quarterfinals will feature two games at South Acres Field. The first will have fourth-seeded Fourth Ward A’s hosting the fifth-seeded Peabody’s Padres at 11 a.m., followed by the third-seeded Fourth Cardinals hosting the sixth-seeded Fourth Ward Timberjaxx at 3 p.m. The opening round is single elimination and seven innings in regulation.
In the second game between the A’s and Expos, Joe Kirkpatrick hit a grand slam in the first inning to give the A’s a 4-0 lead.
The Expos cut their deficit to 4-3 after three. In the fourth, Mike Bergman singled and two walks loaded the bases, with nobody out. Force outs at the plate resulted in two outs before Billy Davis’ two-run infield hit gave the Expos the win.
Mark Passino led Meron’s with two doubles and two RBI, while Davis added a single, double and three RBI. Bergman was the winning pitcher.
In the opener, Kirkpatrick struck out five in going the distance for the win and also helped himself at the plate with two singles. Phil McGee chipped in with a run-scoring double.
Davis, who took the loss, went three-for-three, including two doubles and two RBI. Paul Bruno and Passino each doubled, with Passino driving in a run.

TIMBERJAXX 10, CARDINALS 3
PLATTSBURGH — The Fourth Ward Timberjaxx (4-10) erased a 3-1 deficit with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, with the big blow being a three-run, pinch-hit home run by Jimmy Knight Jr.
Justin Mahan, Tim LaFave, D.J. Barber, Andrew Price, Josh Chapman and Kyle Bisonette led the Timberjaxx with two hits apiece, with Barber, Price, Chapman and Bisonette getting doubles.
Bisonette went the distance for the pitching win and struck out seven.
Tom Neale accounted for three of the Fourth Ward Cardinals’ hits, including two doubles and a single. The Cardinals ended the regular season with a 7-7 record.

LYON MOUNTAIN — David Waldron tossed a three-hit shutout, with seven strikeouts, as the regular season champion and top-seeded Lyon Mountain Miners (11-2) blanked the Peabody’s Padres.
Waldron carried a perfect game into the fifth inning when it was broken up by Eric Bell’s single to center.
Waldron helped his cause at the plate with two hits, while Tory Bouyea added a triple and run-batted-in. Kris Chase, Kyle Kowalowski and Scott Baker drove in runs for the Miners, who scored two runs in the first and two in the fifth.
Frank Brogna allowed five hits and fanned five in going the distance for the setback. Chris Markwica rapped a double, while Bell and Shane Perrotte added singles for the Padres (4-8-1).
Three innings of the second game were played before the contest was rained out.
