10 YEARS AGO (2002)

E Sophomore Lori Babbie of Northeastern Clinton pitches a no-hitter against Northern Adirondack.

▶ Plattsburgh State's Jay Wells finishes ninth in the men's 10,000 meters at the NCAA Div. III Track & Field Championships with a time of 31:29.84.

▶ Heather Bessette, Elsie Bailey and Karen Law lead Malone to a 161-158 win over Madrid-Waddington in a showdown of NAC track unbeatens.

▶ Matt King's 2-over-par round of 74 leads Peru to a 32-stroke victory in the Section VII golf championships. Teammates Brandon Smith (80), Adam Reyell (83) and Jeff DeLaMater (84) also crack the top five.

▶ Tupper Lake's Ben Gallo sweeps the hurdles to lead Tupper Lake to the VanDusen track title. Plattsburgh's Alex Manabat wins the high and long jumps while Saranac Lake's Laura Snizek captures the 100 and 400.

▶ Former NCCS standout Pete Kehoe wraps up his University of Rhode Island baseball career with a 16-12 pitching record. He is a two-time All-New England selection.

20 YEARS AGO (1992)

E NAC's Shannon Trombley drives in 10 runs with 4 hits, including 2 grand slams, in a 31-18 win over PHS.

▶ Chris Belleville shoots a 79 to lead Tupper Lake to the Section VII golf crown. Plattsburgh's Mike Jolin repeats as individual champion.

▶ Joe Rockhill knocks in 9 runs with 6 hits in Malone's doubleheader sweep of St. Lawrence Central.

▶ Missy Mato, Missy Liberty and Francine Mitchell get 2 hits apiece to back winning pitcher Elizabeth Fayette as Saranac upsets Seton Catholic 12-6, handing the Knights their first loss in 12 games.

▶ Alex Wiseman sweeps the dashes while teammates Chris Clark, Skip Robistow and Derek Poirier dominate the distance events as Malone bests Ogdensburg 142-119 in a battle of unbeatens. Tom Maloney and Bryan Law capture the throws for the Huskies.

▶ Winning pitcher Chad Montville helps his cause with 3 hits in Elizabethtown-Lewis's division-clinching victory.

▶ Christina Augustine's defensive gem helps Keene hold off Westport for a 10-9 win, giving the Beavers the division pennant.

25 YEARS AGO (1987)

E Eighth-grader Kristen Barnett, freshmen Darcy Barry, Michelle Monahan and Jenny Giambruno and sophomore Nancy Campagna lead St. John's to a 79-53 win over Peru, giving the Irish their seventh CVAC track title in 9 years.

▶ Unbeaten Lake Placid erupts for 7 runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Chazy 20-14 and clinch the MVAC baseball title. Jim Winch hits a 3-run homer and Lawrence collects 3 hits.

▶ Joe Staves steps down as MAI basketball coach after leading the Mounties to a school-record 21 victories in the 1986-87 season.

▶ Willsboro's Charlie Gay pitches a 3-hitter and chips in with an RBI double as the Warriors cool off surging Chazy 5-1.

▶ Tony Montemorra, Greg Johnson, Larry Cassidy, Todd Furnia, Will Washington, Doug Meagher, Brian Hickey and Jeff Way lead Peru to an 84-48 win over PHS, snapping the Hornets' dual-meet winning streak at 59.

▶ Kelly Santose rips a 3-run triple and Tracy Patnode knocks in 4 runs with 3 hits as unbeaten Crown Point beats Dannemora 8-0 to win its first MVAC softball title in 7 years.

▶ Becky Stiles hurls a no-hitter to help Saranac clinch a tie for first in its division.

30 YEARS AGO (1982)

E Doug Kacharvich, assistant coach at Lake Superior (Mich.) State, is named men's hockey coach at Plattsburgh State.

▶ Pam Goddeau pitches a no-hitter while Tammy and Lisa Coryea each contribute 3 hits to Saranac's 14-1 victory over AuSable Valley.

▶ Laurie Keller claims 4 firsts and Mary Lamb and Noelle LaVallie garner 3 each as Ticonderoga downs AuSable Valley 77-55 in a showdown of track unbeatens.

▶ St. John's ace Frank Miller follows his no-hitter with a 2-hit shutout of Plattsburgh High.

▶ Ken St. Pierre tosses a 2-hitter and Warren Spaulding smacks a 3-run double in Crown Point's 9-0 thumping of Westport.

▶ Cass, Carol and Margaret Pearl join teammates Karen Baumgartner, Wendy LaMarche, Lisa Yuska and Karen Guimond in leading St. John's to a 73-59 triumph over Ticonderoga in a battle of track unbeatens.

▶ Mike Grace and Norm Garceau win doubles to lead Northeastern Clinton to its third straight Section VII tennis championship. In an all-Beekmantown singles final, Kevin McGraw upsets Andy Light 6-4, 6-4.

▶ Beekmantown's Mair Olmsted turns in record-setting performances in the 400 and 800 at the CVAC individual championships. Cass Pearl (400 hurdles), Paula Maynard (pentathlon), Kim Norris (3,000), Sue Kelly (discus) and Doug Olson (400 hurdles) also set records, along with two St. John's girls relay teams.

40 YEARS AGO (1972)

E Randy Carter scores in the first overtime to give Saranac a 5-4 victory over St. John's in lacrosse.

▶ Roby Politi, a two-time All-American in skiing and a baseball standout, is honored as St. Lawrence University's Senior Athlete of the Year.

▶ Scott Phinney pitches a 4-hitter, Rick Ferrell belts a home run and Les Ferrell and Dennis Couchey each collect 4 hits as unbeaten Elizabethtown-Lewis defeats Schroon Lake 4-1.

▶ Joe Arre pitches a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in MAI's 13-0 win over NCCS. Billy Knox goes 4-for-5 for the Mounties while Lonnie DeCavallas and Paul O'Connell chip in with 3 hits apiece.

▶ Wendy Meeker breaks records in the 50-yard dash (6.5) and 100 (10.9) and teams with Mary Palmer, Bonnie Bridge and Cindy Palmer to win the 440 relay as Westport edges Peru 43-40 to win the Section VII track championships. Poppy Rock, Cathy Phillips, Sue Sears and Cindy Palmer also set sectional marks in individual events.

50 YEARS AGO (1962)

E Dick King hurls a 2-hit shutout and Game 2 winning pitcher Terry Polhemus helps his cause with 2 hits as OLVA sweeps St. John's 4-0, 3-2.

▶ Bob Newbegin and Charlie Stone rap triples to support the 2-hit pitching of Randy Couture in Champlain's 6-1 win over Dannemora.

▶ Bill Dobey goes 3-for-4 to back winning pitcher Skipper Luppy in Westport's 8-4 win over Schroon Lake.

▶ Freshman John Kitchen remains unbeaten in the 440 and sophomore Bill Laundrie wins the mile with a personal-best of 4:56.8 while Chuck Vorhees picks up 3 firsts as PHS tops Malone 60-58 in track. Paul Shirley wins the shot put with a heave of 45 feet, 2 inches. Wood and Vivlamore double for the Huskies.

▶ Bobby Petrashune pitches a 3-hitter with 11 strikeouts while Joe Olivan, Marshall DuBray and Alex Benware collect 2 hits each as unbeaten Lyon Mountain wraps up the CCIL crown with a 7-2 win over Mooers.

▶ Jimmy Baker pitches a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and also drives in 2 runs with a triple and a single in Plattsburgh's 9-0 victory over St. John's.

60 YEARS AGO (1952)

E Jim Varian pitches a 2-hitter with 12 strikeouts and Mike Frenze contributes 2 hits in Champlain College's 6-5 win over Vermont.

▶ Guay collects 4 hits as St. Mary's of Champlain hands previously unbeaten Peru an 11-5 setback.

▶ Tom Cronin's 2-run single in the seventh sends St. John's on to a 4-3 win over PHS.

E Art Ryan and Larry Evola each smack 2-run homers to give Gil Burnell the victory in Plattsburgh State's 8-7 win over Albany State.

70 YEARS AGO (1942)

E Leonard Rock fires a 2-hitter and Art Larose goes 4-for-4 in Morrisonville's 15-3 win over St. Mary's of Champlain.

▶ Minckler pitches a one-hitter and Garcia comes through with 2 hits as Lyon Mountain edges PHS 4-2. J. Mills has the lone hit for Plattsburgh.

▶ McDonald tosses a 2-hitter with 13 strikeouts to lead Mooers to a 2-0 win over Ellenburg. Seguin allows only 2 hits in the loss.

▶ Arnold Beauchemin pitches a no-hitter in Cadyville's win over St. Mary's.

▶ Whalen, McClellan, Kedmenec and Wojcik lead Mineville to a 50-45 victory over Plattsburgh High in track.
