NORWOOD — Quenton Barber tossed a complete-game one-hitter, while Dan Hartman and Caleb Keysor each registered two hits as the Clinton County (Jr.) Mariners knocked off the Norfolk (Sr.) Rovers Friday, 3-0, in the Norfolk Rovers Tournament.
“This does come as a surprise,” Mariners (14-2) coach Gary Duquette said. “I didn’t know we were playing a Senior team until I arrived at the game. Our kids were excited to play, and they took it as a challenge. It was a good win for us.”
The Mariners jumped on the board from the get-go, totaling two runs in the opening frame.
The first two batters recorded walks before successfully reaching second and third base on a double steal.
Barber belted a single to right-center field, scoring two on the play and helping Clinton County to a 2-0 lead.
The Mariners extended the differential to three when Hartman recorded an RBI single with the bases loaded in the third inning.
Hartman finished the contest 2-for-2 at the plate, hitting the team’s lone extra-base hit.
Blake Altizer attempted to reach home plate in an effort to make it 4-0, but was tagged out to end the inning.
Barber was credited with the win on the mound, firing 92 pitches and eight strikeouts in the complete-game performance.
“All of last year, it was hard to stretch him out on the mound,” Duquette said. “After 80 pitches, he would lose his velocity. He threw 92 (Friday), the most he’s ever thrown for us. It was nice to see him maintain his velocity and have command of his pitches.”
With the win, Clinton County will face Watertown today at 1:30 p.m., and Duquette has elected to start Andy Kneussle on the mound.
“He’s been having an outstanding year so far,” Duquette said. “We’re just riding our defense and pitching.”
