NORWOOD — Grant Strack tallied a hat trick and added an assist to help lead Saranac Lake to a 4-2 non-league victory over Norwood-Norfolk Monday in boys’ ice hockey.
Strack opened scoring just over two minutes into the first period on an assist from Nick Bayruns, who had two on the day.
The Flyers tied it at one in the second period with just over a minute left on the clock on a goal from Troy Kovach. Tyler Fobare collected the assist.
Christian Thomas, just an eighth-grader, made it 2-1 Red Storm (2-2-1) with his first-career goal at the varsity level, which came on a power play. Chris Spicer and Strack picked up the assists.
Strack then tallied at the 9:58 mark of the third period to provide what proved to be the game-winning goal. He added an empty-net goal with 15 seconds remaining in the game.
Cody Smith also tallied for Norwood-Norfolk with Kovach adding the assist.
Drew Sturgeon and Quinn Urquhart added assists for the Red Storm.
“It was a really good non-league victory,” Saranac Lake coach Will Ellsworth said. “It’s very tough to play in a hostile environment. We weathered the storm; we played a limited style of hockey and came away with the win.”
Despite Strack’s hat trick, the player of the game for the Red Storm may have been their goaltender.
Blake Darrah faced 41 shots on goal during the game and turned away 39 of them to capture the victory. Brandon Richards made 23 saves in net for the Flyers.
