New CVBL season begins, Miners look to retain title

PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Valley Baseball League, with all teams using wooden bats this season for the first time, is set to begin its season today, with three doubleheaders on the schedule.

The league has expanded from six teams to seven this season with the addition of the Adams Glass Dodgers, who have a bye the first week.

The schedule for today, weather permitting, includes the Fourth Ward Cardinals at the Lyon Mountain Miners in a rematch of the last year’s playoff finals won by the Miners, Meron’s Expos at Fourth Ward A’s at Lefty Wilson Field, and Peabody’s Padres at the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx at South Acres Field.

Another change this year is that there will be weekday games.

The Miners will be looking to make it three playoff championships in a row this season.

Lyon Mountain will once again feature a veteran and successful group, including David Waldron, Reilly Lawless, Kris Chase, Justin Besaw, Kyle Kowalowski, Scott Baker, Jerry Kowalowski, Tom Kowalowski, Tory Bouyea, Chris VanHouten, Josh Rabideau and Kasey Favreau.

Waldron, Besaw and Van Houten, along with Favreau, will handle the majority of the pitching.

There is a chance the Miners will be adding a couple of newcomers to help out along the way. But with the solid core of players returning off last year’s championship team, not a lot of change is needed.

This year’s Cardinals will return some familiar faces from last season, but will be a younger version with many college baseball players making up the roster from Plattsburgh State, Union College, SUNY Canton and Clinton Community College. Joe Tolosky and C.J. Worley will be running the team when Gary Duquette is away coaching American Legion baseball.

Leading hitters from a season ago include Joe Tolosky (.419), Frank Buksa Jr. (.412), C.J. Worley (.391), Alex LaFountain (.321) and Brian Latulipe (.286). The pitching staff will include Gary Duquette, Tom Neale, LaFountain, Will Flynn, Kyle Kelly, Kristian Sherman, Travis Legacy, Eric Rock and J.D. Jenkins. Legion players on the roster are Jack Tolosky, Brandon Buksa, Ryan Meyer, Dan Hartman, Tristan Archambault and Brandon Rabideau.
