Clinton baseball drops two to Jefferson Community

WATERTOWN — The Clinton Community College baseball team had one bad inning in Thursday’s first game and never got back on track in the second game.

Jefferson Community College scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to win Game 1 12-2 and then grabbed a second 12-2 victory.

“We started off playing well — we had played well in our last several games. We seemed OK, a couple mistakes, and then we just kinda imploded,” Clinton coach Tom Neale said. “And then that carried on the rest of the day.”

The Cougars (2-10) scored two in the first inning of the first game and led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth. The Cannoneers pulled ahead with three runs before ending the game with a huge fifth inning.

“They had a bunch of hits; we had a couple misplayed balls,” Neale said. “It just seemed like we were a step slow and made errors.”

Clinton finished the game with six errors.

Dustin Pond earned the pitching win. Clinton’s Kristian Sherman started, and Evan Nichols relieved him in the fifth. Robert Mejia and Kaleb Snide hit doubles for the Cougars.

Jefferson led 6-1 after three innings of the nightcap and then plated four in the fourth. Eury Villalona earned the win, while Austin Medeiros suffered the setback.

Chris Roenbeck rapped two hits to lead the Cougars’ offense.
