MALONE — Alex Johnson’s two-run homer ignited a six-run fifth inning as Malone Post #219 rallied for an 8-4 victory over the Adams Glass Senior Babe Ruth team on Thursday at the Airport Field.
Adams Glass (0-3) scored single runs in the first and third innings for a 2-0 lead.
Malone (2-0), however, got one run back in the fourth and then broke loose for six in the fifth for a 7-2 advantage.
In addition to Johnson’s home run, Brandon Welch, Blayke Lewis, Zach Burnett and Austin Lamay rapped singles in the inning, with Lamay’s hit driving in two runs. Welch finished with two hits.
Burnett, the second of three Malone pitchers, picked up the victory. Starter Jared Moody, Burnett and Lamay combined to allow three hits.
Alden Kerr, the second of three Adams Glass pitchers, took the loss. Luis Pepen-Matos did not allow a hit over the first four-plus innings and struck out seven. He walked six, however.
“Pepen-Matos pitched well, but his pitch count was high and we set a number before the game because he hadn’t pitched in a while,” Adams Glass coach John Demarais said. “With our league games starting next week, this gave us a chance to look at other pitchers. Kerr and (Jacob) Kennedy both threw strikes, and that’s what we wanted.
“We’re not hitting the ball as well as we can. I was pleased with the way we manufactured runs with our hustle and never-give-up attitude. We will battle until the last out.”
Kevin Sousa, Kyle Sprague and Ethan King had the hits for Adams Glass.
