Perkins wins 8-ball championship

LAKE PLACID— Bill Perkins, from Time Served in Comstock, defeated Mike Mitchell, representing the Brass Horse Grille in Hogansburg, in the final match Saturday to claim the 37th edition of the Northern New York 8-Ball Championship.

In the run leading up to their match, Perkins had only lost two out of 14 games. Mitchell played equally well, setting the stage for an exciting showdown. In the best 3-out-of-5 game series, Perkins started off with two wins as a result of some fine shooting, but then Mitchell came through with some excellent play of his own to even the score. In a cautious, white-knuckle fifth game, Perkins was able to put Mitchell away for the win.

Jamie Dustin took third place, winning his match against Roger Traynor 3-1.

Nina Curley won the women’s division for the second straight year by defeating Mel Herne 3-2. Herne finished ninth in the open division, and almost won the match as she took the first and third games but could not get the additional game needed for the championship. Nikki Rushlaw placed third by beating Melissa Therrian 3-0.
