CHAZY — Chazy was able to put up 18 runs in the first three innings and go on to easily defeat Westport, 22-9, in its Mountain Valley Athletic Conference season opener Monday.
“We definitely got off to a good start,” Chazy coach Elizabeth Garrand said. “We hit very well. We were able to capitalize off walks; we were able to move the runners around.”

Chazy finished with a total of 11 RBI for the game. Sophomore Skyler Thomas led the team with three RBI. Junior Paige Garnot went 3-for-3, with a double and an RBI, and junior Amber Polomsky helped Chazy out as well, going 3-for-5, recording an RBI, and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
Senior Charlotte Staats stole five bases for Westport and although junior Brendee Russell took the loss, she recorded a double for her team on the day.
“Their pitcher Russell came into catch for them, and I thought she had a really strong arm, pitching and catching,” Garrand said.
Chazy was able to show off some of their young stars Monday, as eighth-grader Bailey Pepper started the game and fellow eighth-grader Taylor Laurin came in and recorded two RBI in her first varsity game.
“Some of our eighth graders will definitely play a role,” Garrand said. “I think if we keep up our strong pitching and keep our errors down, we should be looking good throughout the season.”
Paige Barcomb came away with the pitching victory.
