Clinton softball drops doubleheader to Finger Lakes CC

CANANDAIGUA — Rachel Mertens tossed a no-hitter in the first game on Sunday and Finger Lakes Community College went on to record an 8-0 and 10-3 doubleheader sweep of Clinton Community College in women’s softball.

Mertens struck out six and helped her own cause at the plate with two triples. Katie Plummer added a double and single for the Lakers.

In the second game, Clinton jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings only to have Finger Lakes rally.

“We didn’t do anything offensively in the first game, but swung the bats better in the second game and took the early lead,” Clinton coach Sam Stoughton said. “But our worst innings have been the middle innings, and that was the case again today.”

Tamara Robertson led the Lakers with four hits, while Samantha German added a double and home run and Plummer added a double and single.

Elaine Evinsky was the winning pitcher.

Alisha Ducatte rapped a triple, Christine Darrah a double and Lyndale Nephew a single for the Cougars’ lone hits.

Darrah took the pitching loss in both games.

Clinton is home on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Fulton-Montgomery Community College.
