Maye leads Chiefs in Muggsy's Tip-Off Classic

SARANAC — John Maye led the Saranac boys’ basketball team into the championship game of Muggsy’s Tip-Off Classic by scoring 21 points on 10-for-14 shooting and pulling down 12 rebounds.

The Chiefs defeated Schroon Lake 71-40 Friday and will play Northeastern Clinton today.

Saranac pulled out to a 31-19 lead by halftime.

“Schroon Lake is a very gutsy, well coached team,” Saranac coach Brent Denis said. “I felt we played exceptional defense (Friday) and shot the ball well. I was impressed by our intensity and ball pressure. Because of it, we were able to defend a great shooting team.”

Andrew Cutaiar added 11 points for the Chiefs, while Dylan Christopherson and Mitchell Pellerin both scored eight. Morgan Earp chipped in seven.

“John Maye was fantastic (Friday),” Denis said. “Eighth-grader Andrew Cutaiar played well in his first varsity basketball game with 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field.”

Tanner Stone led the Wildcats with 16 points, and Alex Shaughnessy scored seven.

The Cougars raced out to a 33-4 halftime lead and rolled past the Red Storm.

Jon Filion led a balanced Northeastern Clinton scoring attack with 10 points and was followed by Harley Tavernia with nine, and Austin Tetreault, Brendan Boutin and Garrett Begore with eight apiece.

Torrin Smith paced Saranac Lake with five points, while Carl Bevilaqua and Joe Karp were next with four each.
