PLATTSBURGH — It doesn’t get much better than this.
Champlain Valley Baseball League fans will get to see not one, but two third and deciding semifinal playoff games today at Lefty Wilson Field.
The regular season champion and top-seeded Lyon Mountain Miners will oppose the fourth-seeded Fourth Ward A’s at 11 a.m., followed by the second-seeded Meron’s Expos versus the third-seeded Fourth Ward Cardinals at 2:30 p.m.
Both semifinals are knotted a 1-all and the winner of today’s seven-inning contests will move into the finals.
The Miners took the opener last Sunday, 9-5, with Scott Baker leading the way with a single, triple and three RBI. Lyon Mountain trailed, 4-3, before scoring six runs in the sixth, with Baker’s three-run triple the big blow.
The A’s, however, jumped in front with five runs in the second inning of the second contest and held on for a 7-4 victory to force a third game. Tyler Mesec allowed one hit in relief and accounted for a double, triple and three RBI at the plate.
Meanwhile, the Expos got the jump in their opener against the Cardinals as Billy Davis went the distance for the pitching win and Mark Passino led the way offensively with a single, double and two RBI in a 5-2 decision.
The second game was tied, 1-all, after seven innings and, 3-all, after eight before the Cardinals tallied three in the ninth for a 6-3 victory. Steve Burris went eight innings to get the pitching win and Brandon Buksa, Joe Tolosky, Nate Durkee and Burris rapped out two hits apiece.
