Peru's Bushey named All-American

---- — PERU — Jordan Bushey, who will be entering his junior year at Peru Central School in the fall, took home All-American honors recently for his outstanding performance at the Greco-Roman and Freestyle Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota.

The top eight in each wrestling class become All-Americans and Bushey placed seventh in the Cadet Freestyle at 145 pounds.

Bushey, who also had a 2-2 record in Greco-Roman, finished with a 6-2 mark in Freestyle.

“There were 80 wrestlers from throughout the country in Jordan’s weight class and it’s quite an accomplishment for him,” Peru wrestling coach Mike Hogan said. “It’s nice to know our local wrestlers can compete on a national level.”

Bushey recorded five victories in a row — a 7-3 decision over Illinois’ Devon Simpson, a 10-0 win over Oregon’s Cohen Merritt, an 11-0 victory over Minnesota’s Jacob Johnson, a pin in 1:25 over Wisconsin’s Ross Siegenthaler and a 10-0 decision over Ohio’s Ben Hooff.

He then dropped two matches, both 13-2 decisions, to Pennsylvania’s D.J. Hollingshead and to Illinois’ Larry Early.

Bushey then won by injury default over New York’s Jakob Restrepo to finish seventh.

Bushey is also a two-time Section VII champion, a two-time member of the New York State national team, a 2012 state champion in Greco-Roman and a 2013 state runner-up in Greco-Roman.

A number of Section VII wrestlers took part in the national event and Peru’s Troy Seymour, competing at 160 pounds in the Junior division, barely missed out on All-American honors.

Seymour ended up with a 5-2 record and needed one more win to place. He ended up finishing 10th in his weight class.
