Donny Coolidge collects 3 hits and throws a runner out at the plate to lead the Clinton County Mariners to the District IV American Legion Baseball crown with a 5-4 victory over Amsterdam.

Gerald Burdo goes out on top, retiring after many years of coaching, as his Meyer Video teams wins the Plattsburgh Little League championship.
Jim Ryan’s grand slam keys Midas Mudhens’ 7-6 triumph and a doubleheader sweep of Peru in Champlain Valley Baseball League play.
Jim Wood, Lonnie Cleland, Gary Leavine, Scott McCormick, Rocky Deaton, Chris King and Bill LeBeau spark Mickey’s to a stunning comeback win over Ahern’s Sheet Metal in the Adirondack Slo-Pitch Softball League playoffs. Mickey’s, trailing 10-3, rallies in the bottom of the ninth to win and take the A Division series.

Bill Digman and Mark Stone each rap out 3 hits to lead Clinton Coal to victory over Tim’s Place and to a third straight Peru Slo-Pitch Softball League championship. Shannon Brown and Eugene Ashline each deliver 3 hits for Tim’s.
Cammy Myler wins gold in kayaking and Jeff Way takes a gold in wrestling in the Empire State Games.
Dodd Kleinschmidt, Raymond Guay and Eric Wasserbach are the defensive standouts for Giroux’s in their 2-1 overtime victory over Harvey’s in the men’s soccer battle of Chazy. Brent Wilson, Dave Trombley and Pat Ryan star for Harvey’s.

Jon Gottschall defeats Art Lussi in the men’s final while Cindy Baker tops Chris Lussi for the women’s title in the Press-Republican North Country Tennis Tournament. The Lussis are the defending champions.
Shawn Terry, starting in place of Scott Baker, hurls the Redford River Rats to a 7-1 victory over McGee’s Mud Hens and into the CVBL playoffs for the first time.
Ed Sparkowski turns back the challenge of Dave Daniels and Marty Beauchamp to win the 7th Bud Light Run in a course-record time of 25:42.
Plattsburgh’s Anne Winterkorn, Alan Goldman and Mike Stone join Bloomingdale’s Elizabeth McGraw as place-finishers in the USSA Adirondack Long Course Swimming Championships in Delmar.
40 YEARS AGO (1973)
Barry Dimick knocks in 10 runs with 6 hits and 18-year-old Steve Chilton scatters 6 hits in the nightcap to lead Ellenburg to a 9-6, 14-3 sweep of defending champion Peru in the CVBL playoffs. Joe Staves, subbing for the injured Tom Kowalowski behind the plate, goes 5 for 7 with 4 doubles as the Lyon Mountain Miners sweep Post 20 in their semifinal series.
Host Malone wins the Ladies Interclub Golf Tournament with Plattsburgh placing third. Betty Ward leads Plattsburgh with a 76; Phoebe Eelman, Marge Jerry and Barb Jerry follow with 77s and Mary Joyce cards a 78.
Hank Williamson, driving a Saab Sonnet, turns the fastest lap (59.58 seconds) in the WKDR Challenge Cup Series at Plattsburgh International Raceway. Other class winners include Paul Coonrad, Chris Christoffersen, John and Bill Wattie, Bruce Muser, Bruce Brunell, Tim Hall, Jon Belair and Shirley Lipscomb.
50 YEARS AGO (1963)
Joe Russell pitches a 4-hitter, smacks a homer and drives in 4 runs to lead Peru to a 6-4 victory over Lyon Mountain in a battle for first place in the Clinton County Junior League. Gerald Bradley also comes up with 4 hits. Mike Shusda takes the loss.
Bermuda Girl, driven by Mark Williamson of Ellenburg Center, wins the Harry Hopkins Memorial Pace at the St. Lawrence County Fair in Gouverneur.
Charlie Trombley, in his 5 7/8 limited model sportsman car, holds off the bigger engines to win the 100-lap Northern New York Championship at Airborne Speedway. Bob Bruno and Andre Manny finish second and third.
The Pine Ridge Bowmen, led by Randy McClatchie and Charlie Ryan, win the North Country League for Instinctive Bowmen Handicap Championship for the second straight year., but lose in actual team competition to Massena. Rhada Ryan and Clare Beaubriand of Plattsburgh finish 1-2 in the Ladies’ Division.
60 YEARS AGO (1953)
Former Ticonderoga coach Ernest DeGutis, 26, is named to succeed Harold Herbold, 26, as athletic director and coach at Plattsburgh High School. Herbold resigns to accept a teaching position in Glens Falls.
John Fountain pitches a 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts as the Plattsburgh Pirates overwhelm Malone 19-0 in Northern New York Kiwanis League playoff action. Ronnie LaPorte, Jack Case and Fountain each collect 2 hits.
In the Kiwanis Junior contest, the Plattsburgh Foxes, behind the pitching of Warren Tessier and the hitting of Don Buckley, Pete Cronin, John Owens and Larry Wells, beat Malone 17-0.
A crowd of 2,000 at Belmont Beach take in outboard racing on Chateaugay Lake. William Canders and Clarence Duquette of Cadyville win their classes. Morris Kaufman of Champlain, Chuck Kemp of AuSable Forks and David Gorman of Fort Covington also come in first.
Jim Boyd’s 2-run homer leads Peru past Black Brook, 9-3, and to the Clinton County Peewee League baseball championship.

New York State announces there will be an open season on antlerless deer from Oct. 20-25. It’s only the second time in 25 years and hunters need to purchase a special license from county officials and can hunt only in that county.
