PLATTSBURGH — On the line this weekend for the Clinton County Junior Mariners is a trip to the New York State American Legion Tournament.
The Mariners will take part in a double-elimination Zone Tournament in Saugerties that features the champions from District IV, District III and District IX. The survivor moves on to the states.
The Middletown Cobras will represent District IX, while the District III representative was decided Friday night when the Saratoga Stampede played Zaloga Post from Albany.
The Mariners will oppose either Saratoga or Zaloga Post in an opening-round contest at 1 p.m.
If Clinton County wins, it will take on Middletown in the following game in the winner’s bracket.
“We played in the Middletown Tournament earlier in the season,” said Mariners coach Gary Duquette. “We’ve had a good season, but we’re not satisfied with just winning the District title. This is another step for us and we want to win the Zone Tournament.
“The kids are excited and ready to go. We’ve had some good practices this week and I know our kids are going to give 100 percent effort like they have in every game they’ve played this season. They battle on every pitch.”
The Mariners bring a 21-4 overall record into the weekend.
“We know we’re going to get good pitching and Andy Kneussle will be on the mound for our first game,” said Duquette.
“If our bats come alive, we’re going to be tough to beat.”
The state tournament will be held in Utica beginning on August 2.
