---- — LYON MOUNTAIN — The Fourth Ward A’s pushed the top-seeded Lyon Mountain Miners to the limit on Sunday.

The Miners rallied for a 9-5 win in the opener, but the fourth-seeded A’s prevailed by a 7-4 score in the second contest to force a third and deciding game this coming Sunday in the Champlain Valley Baseball League semifinal playoffs.

The Miners trailed, 4-3, entering the bottom of the sixth inning of the opener before breaking loose for six runs. Lyon Mountain took a 5-4 lead before Scott Baker had the big blow in the inning — a three-run triple.

Baker finished with a single, triple and three RBI, while Tory Bouyea added a single and double, Jerry Kowalowski two singles and Kyle Kowalowski a double.

Pat Shaughnessy accounted for a good share of the A’s offense with two doubles and three RBI. Jake Oswald added a double.

Winning pitcher David Waldron struck out five in going 6.2 innings and Luke Weaver got the final out for the save. Brian Burns fanned eight, walked seven and allowed 10 hits in taking the loss.

The standout for the A’s in the second game was Tyler Mesec. Mesec allowed just one hit the rest of the way for the save after taking over for winning pitcher Joe Kirkpatrick in the fifth inning. Offensively, Mesec accounted for a double, triple and three RBI.

Oswald added two hits and two RBI for the A’s, who scored five runs in the second inning. The Miners got four of the runs back in the fourth, but the A’s then added two insurance runs in the fifth.

Bouyea led Lyon Mountain with a single, double and triple, while Baker rapped a two-run homer and Weaver a double. Justin Besaw started and took the pitching loss.

PLATTSBURGH — The second-seeded Meron’s Expos and third-seeded Fourth Ward Cardinals split two competitive games, setting up a deciding game in Plattsburgh this coming Sunday.

In the opener, Billy Davis struck out five and allowed four hits in going the distance for the pitching win.

Mark Passino led the Expos with a single, double and two RBI, while Cliff Conners added two singles and a RBI, and Glenn Engstrom a double.

The Cardinals held a 1-0 lead before the Expos tallied two in the bottom of the fifth for a 2-1 advantage. The Cardinals then tied it with a run in the sixth, only to have Meron’s get three in the home half.

C.J. Worley paced the Fourth Ward with a single and double, while Nate Durkee chipped in a RBI double.

The second game went into extra innings, with the score tied at 1-all.

The Cardinals went ahead with two in the eighth, but the Expos knotted it in the home half of the inning when Jordan Woods tripled in a run with two out and scored on an overthrow of third base.

The Fourth Ward, however, prevailed with three in the ninth.

Brandon Buksa, Joe Tolosky, Durkee and Steve Burris led the Cardinals with two hits apiece. Durkee had a double and two RBI, while Frank Buksa and Bret Bosley each had a double.

Burris struck out nine in going eight innings for the pitching win and Craig Bujold went the ninth for the save. Mike Bergman fanned 10 while pitching into the ninth to take the tough loss.

Woods accounted for a triple and single for the Expos. Engstrom added two hits and Passino a solo homer.
