Heywood breaks into win column

PLATTSBURGH — Andy Heywood got to the front early and held up under steady pressure from Todd Stone and Pat Dupree to win the Agency Insurance DIRTcar Modified 30-lap main event at Airborne Speedway Saturday.

Stone spent 10 laps on Heywood’s tail before yielding the second spot to Dupree with two laps left. Dupree rolled the dice with an all-out power move on the rim of the fourth turn but couldn’t make it stick as Stone recovered second place a car length away from Heywood’s Roto-Rooter/Gioisia’s Wine & Spirits No. 80. Kris Vernold and Leon Gonyo completed the top five.

The win was Heywood’s first 358-Modified win on asphalt in five years of trying. “I’m glad to be here,” Heywood said in victory lane. “I know who was coming after me.”

“I gave it a shot and threw it in there, but it didn’t stick,” Dupree said. “It was a fun race.”

The race was red-flagged after one lap when Heywood and Chris Cayea glanced off one another heading down the frontstretch. The chain reaction that resulted sent Mike Reyell into the fence and No. 2 point man Jessey Mueller off on the wrecker.

Heywood soon opened up a large lead, but it was erased by a caution on lap 11. Vernold was alongside Heywood on the restart with Stone and Dupree in row two.

Jamy Begor of Mooers had the Limited Late Model feature fall in his lap after Bucko Branham got into Danny Sullivan’s machine as they entered turn one on the next to last lap.

Begor had to fend off Robin Wood to earn his first win of the season. Dave Rabtoy had a seasonal best third-place finish ahead of Larry Underwood and Brandon Atkins.

Begor started fifth on the grid in the Agency Insurance/Huntley Trucking No. 19, but Branham and Sullivan got past and went on to swap the lead three times.
