Mike Deane, former Plattsburgh State assistant coach and PBA tournament legend, is hired as men’s basketball coach at Wagner College.

Aren Laundree and Tara Vilardo each drive in 2 runs with 2 hits as Ticonderoga drubs Norwood-Norfolk 13-3 in Class C state softball regional play. Greenwich, behind the one-hit pitching of Abby McCormick, ends the Sentinels’ run with a 5-0 victory.

Jeremiah St. Louis pitches a 3-hitter and Scott Cheney collects 4 hits as Tupper Lake tops Norwood-Norfolk 2-1 in Class C state baseball regional action.

Crown Point edges Johnsburg 4-3 to win the overall title in MVAC softball despite getting no hits. Johnsburg manages only one hit in the loss.

20 YEARS AGO (1993)

Carrie Frederick pitches a 4-hit shutout and Stephanie Wheet singles in the lone run as Peru edges Gouverneur 1-0 in Class B regional softball play.

Plattsburgh High’s Mike Jolin shoots rounds of 81 and 72 for a 153 and then wins a five-way playoff for sixth place in the state scholastic golf tournament.

Eighth-grader Amber Cringle, in her first varsity at-bat, delivers an RBI triple to help Saranac top Canton 10-9 in regional softball. Missy Mato and Ann Parks contribute 3 hits each.

Jeremy Hall of Ticonderoga wins the discus throw at the state track & field championships with a toss of 178 feet, 7 inches — beating his closest rival by 18 feet.

25 YEARS AGO (1988)

Plattsburgh State’s All-America defenseman Chris Panek signs a 3-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings of the NHL. Cardinals’ assistant hockey coach Glen Giovanucci resigns to accept a position at the U.S. Military Academy.

Peru, behind the pitching of Don Abernethy and Travis Angevine, reaches the state Class B final in baseball. However, Dunkirk spoils Peru’s hopes with a 3-2 victory. The Indians load the bases with one out in the seventh, but are unable to score.

Plattsburgh’s Kim Chambers places third in the B Division of the New York State Women’s Bowling Association Tournament with a 654 handicap series.

30 YEARS AGO (1983)

Sheryl MacKinnon, Loraine Bedard and Donna Gadway come through with key hits to lead Northeastern Clinton to an 11-8 victory over previously undefeated Peru in the Section VII Class B softball final.

Anne Pearl belts a 3-run homer and Katherine Riley adds a solo shot while Becky Palmer and Gina Jiampetti each knock in 3 runs in St. John’s 18-17 win over Marlboro in the Capital Conference Class C softball final.

Craig Roberts pitches a 7-hit shutout as Dannemora defeats Schroon Lake 4-0 to win the MVAC baseball title. Chris LaRose raps a 2-run homer onto the roof of the Elizabethtown school while Gary Donivan adds 2 hits for the Knights.

AuSable Valley’s Wayne Lacy places sixth in the pole vault at the state track & field championships with a height of 13 feet, 6 inches.

Colleen McPhail, Bea Disogra, Anna Pulsifer and T.J. Cornwright each get 3 hits to lead Elizabethtown-Lewis to a 21-6 win over Dannemora for the Class D softball crown.

Kirk Little pitches 5 innings of scoreless relief and adds a 2-run double to spark St. John’s to a 4-2 victory over Northern Adirondack for the Class C baseball title. Rodney Doe belts a home run for the Irish.

Lake Placid’s Brad Streeter wins the Whiteface Mountain Uphill Footrace for the second time in 3 years, covering the 8-mile climb in 59 minutes, 46 seconds.

Darrin McDonough strikes out 9 of the first 10 batters he faces and goes on to pitch a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts in Keene’s 4-1 victory over Dannemora in the Class D1 final. Jay Dumas contributes 3 hits while Chuck Frost and Carl Lichtenberg each chip in with two.

40 YEARS AGO (1973)

Russ Keller goes 3-for-4 to lead Plattsburgh High to a 5-4 victory over NAC for the Section VII Class A baseball crown.

Lightning strikes the North Country Golf Club, resulting in $30,000 in fire damage.

George Egan goes 4-for-4 with 3 RBI, Rich Camilleri raps out 3 doubles and Dave Swinton adds 3 hits as Schroon Lake beats Willsboro 11-6 to win the Class B title. Lonnie Cross has an RBI double for the Warriors.

50 YEARS AGO (1963)

Junior Frank Woodward finishes third in points on the Plattsburgh State track team with four firsts and two thirds. His best time in the 440-yard dash is 53.4 seconds and in the 880, 2:00.7.

Patricia LaPierre rolls a 1,525 to finish third in the New York Junior Bowling Championships.

Mike Shusda and Alex Benware collect 2 hits each as Lyon Mountain edges Newcomb 6-5 to win the Class C baseball crown.

60 YEARS AGO (1953)

Dick Strack and Ted Dashnaw each win 2 events and Ernie Fowler picks up a first and a second to lead Lake Placid to the Section VII championship in track & field.

Champlain College drops a 6-3 decision to Norwich University in its final sports event. The school is scheduled to close to make way for Plattsburgh Air Force Base. Losing pitcher Jim Varian is hurt by 6 errors. Ismet Baker belts a home run while Bill Burger adds 2 hits. Red Miller goes hitless, but finishes the year leading the Bluejays in batting with a .350 average.

Ace Bird pitches a 4-hitter as St. John’s, coached by Roger Tolosky, defeats Dannemora 7-3 for the Fran-Clin baseball title. Jim Ryan raps a home run, Bob Ducatte delivers a 2-run double and Dave Rock, an RBI double.

Lyman Boynton, Tom Bombard and Paul Savage collect 2 hits apiece and Wayne Ano pitches a 5-hitter with 14 strikeouts as AuSable Forks tops Ticonderoga 5-4 for the Section VII Class A championship.

70 YEARS AGO (1943)

Milton Rockwell pitches a 3-hitter with 16 strikeouts as the Plattsburgh Pirates blast a pick-up team 18-2.

Tourville, Papa, Flanders, Sloane and Mackey lead the juniors to victory in the annual Plattsburgh High intrascholastic track meet. Giles takes 3 events for the seniors.

With meat rationing on because of the war, the state opens frog season. A fishing license is required to take frogs with a gun or long bow.
