City Police capture Baseball Club title

PLATTSBURGH — City Police, after recording a 10-7 victory the day before, edged out a 9-8, eight-inning win over McSweeney’s on Wednesday to post a 2-0 sweep of the best-of-three series in the Plattsburgh Baseball Club playoff finals.

Cam Hurlburt scored on Bailey Cross’ bunt single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give City Police its victory.

McSweeney’s trailed, 6-3, before scoring four times in the sixth inning to rally into a 7-6 advantage. City Police then got a run back in the home half to tie it.

The game went into extra innings before McSweeney’s regained the lead with a run in the eighth.

But, in the bottom of the inning, Andrew Bechard singled, stole second and scored on Hurlburt’s RBI single. With Hurlburt running on the play, Cross bunted down third for a hit and Hurlburt went all the way to third. The throw was misplayed and that allowed Hurlburt to score the game-winning run.

Hurlburt also picked up the pitching win in relief.

In the first game, City Police jumped out to an early 5-1 lead before McSweeney’s tied it with four in the bottom of the third.

McSweeney’s took 7-6 advantage into the top of the seventh when City Police broke loose for four runs for a 10-7 lead. Nathan Hebert and Keegan Frenyea had extra-base hits in the inning, each driving in two runs.

Nate Brault was the winning pitcher and Hurlburt, who picked up the save, went three-for-three, with three RBI. Bechard, Cross, Hebert and Frenyea each added two hits each.

Brady Pennington led McSweeney’s with three hits, while Alex Follmer and Alex Zurlo each added two. Pennington had a two-run single and an RBI single, while Zurlo chipped in with a two-run single.

Frenyea finished the series with five hits and seven RBI, while Hurlburt accounted for six hits, seven RBI, a win and a save. Bechard scored seven runs.
