PLATTSBURGH — Tanner Rascoe’s two-out, three-run double was the big blow in a five-run sixth inning as the Clinton County Senior Mariners recorded a 5-3 win over the Fourth Ward Cardinals in an exhibition game at Lefty Wilson Field Monday.
The Mariners’ victory overshadowed an outstanding pitching performance by Clinton County Junior Mariners head coach Gary Duquette, who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
Tom Neale’s sacrifice fly in the opening frame gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
It stayed that way until the sixth. Duquette retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced, with the only runner reaching on an error. Duquette struck out four and didn’t walk anyone.
“Gary was lights out,” Mariners head coach Matt Tolosky said.
Chris Roenbeck’s one-out single to right broke up Duquette’s no-hit bid, and he was taken out of the game at that time.
An error gave the Mariners their tying run and Rascoe’s three-run double put Clinton County ahead to stay at 4-1. Then, Conor Casey’s run-scoring single gave the Mariners a 5-1 advantage.
“We took advantage of our opportunity,” Tolosky said.
The Cardinals got two of the runs back in the seventh, with Jake Tolosky driving in one with a single.
Fourth Ward, however, left the bases loaded five times.
“We did what we had to getting out of those innings,” Tolosky said. “We made the plays when we needed to.”
The Mariners, tuning up for this weekend’s District IV Playoffs in Granville, used four pitchers — Jake Richards, Rascoe, Kasey Favreau and Jack Tolosky. Favreau picked up the victory.
“It was a good tune-up for us against a quality team,” Tolosky said. “It was a game we needed to play before the playoffs.”
Roenbeck, Robby Knowles, Rascoe, Casey and Brandon Rabideau accounted for the Mariners’ hits. Roenbeck, Knowles, Rascoe and Casey all had their hits in the sixth inning uprising.
C.J Worley, Brian Latulipe, Frank Buksa, Jake Tolosky and Nate Durkee rapped out hits for the Cardinals.
