Depo picks up Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award

ALBANY — Senior track and field standout Ben Depo became the third Plattsburgh State student-athlete to be named a 2013 Chancellor’s Scholar Athletic Award recipient.

The Scholar Athlete Award recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement at the Division I, Division III and NJCAA levels.

In order to be considered for this award, student-athletes were nominated by their campus athletic director. Nominees’ academic credentials and athletic accomplishments were then reviewed by a panel of athletic directors from across the State University system and members of the provost’s office.

Depo joins teammate Adam Shearer and women’s ice hockey’s Chelsea VanGlahn as recipients of the award.

Depo, who calls Saranac home, capped off his collegiate athletic pursuits with a banner season beginning with a school-record showing in the heptathlon in the indoor track and field campaign. The senior conjured up a 4,699-point performance in the event and boasted a third-place finish to show for it at the ECAC Championships in New York on March 2.

As the indoor track and field season progressed, Depo made it a point to showcase his prowess in the decathlon, taking home the SUNYAC crown in the event for the third time in four opportunities. He accumulated 6,176 points — due largely to first-place finishes in five of the 10 events — during the conference meet and bested his nearest competitor by 378 points.

Thanks to his performance, Depo took home the SUNYAC’s Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the Year award and ensured himself a spot on the All-SUNYAC First Team. His career came to a close in La Crosse, Wis., at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships where he put forth a 12th-place finish in the decathlon with 6,207 points.
