A's, Cardinals move on in CVBL playoffs

PLATTSBURGH — Brian Burns makes the Fourth Ward A’s a dangerous team in the Champlain Valley Baseball League playoffs.

Burns tossed a one-hitter at South Acres Field Sunday to lead the fourth-seeded A’s to a 1-0 victory over the fifth-seeded Peabody’s Padres in the quarterfinals.

The win sends the A’s into the best-of-three semifinals where they will play a noon doubleheader on Sunday against the regular season and top-seeded Lyon Mountain Miners.

Burns, a former standout pitcher for Plattsburgh State, struck out 11 and walked two in going the seven innings. The lone hit for the Padres was a single in the fifth inning by Brady Burleigh.

The Padres, meanwhile, got a strong pitching performance from hard-luck losing pitcher Frank Brogna, who struck out seven, walked two and allowed five hits in going the route.

The A’s pushed across the lone run of the contest in the third inning. With one out, Matt Meunier walked, Jake Oswald singled, Brian Elliott hit into a fielder’s choice and Pat Shaughnessy delivered the game-winning hit, a two-out, RBI single.

Shaughnessy went two-for-two, while Oswald, Elliott and Joe Kirkpatrick each added a hit for the A’s.

PLATTSBURGH — The sixth-seeded Fourth Ward Timberjaxx held a 3-2 advantage over the third-seeded Fourth Ward Cardinals.

The Cardinals, however, broke loose for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally and pull away.

The Cardinals will take on the second-seeded Meron’s Expos in a noon doubleheader at Lefty Wilson Field this coming Sunday in the semifinals.

Frank Buksa swung the big bat for the Cardinals by going three-for-three, including a home run, two doubles and two RBI. Alex LaFountain chipped in with a two-run double.
