PLATTSBURGH — Michael Parsons of Plattsburgh collected the coveted Mayor’s Cup trophy for the fifth time, headlining the 36th-annual Mayor’s Cup Regatta on Lake Champlain Saturday.
Crewman Peter Hall of Montreal, Que., and Parsons, who also won the Racing division’s title in 2002, 2006, 2008 and 2009, led the crew of Obelix and completed the overall race with a corrected time of two hours, 24 minutes and 32 seconds.
With calm winds coming from the southeast during the first 30 minutes of the event, the crew of Obelix was forced to gamble from the get-go, turning left toward the shoreline.
“As we say in the boat-racing business, we were banging corners,” Parsons said. “It could have been a huge win; it could have been a huge loss. I can’t say it was significantly worse or better than the other side, but it was a risk that we took. When you’re a little boat racing against the big ones, you’ve got to do that sort of thing.”
Manning the back of the soling boat, Hull said the conditions were incredibly challenging at the start.
“The wind was so light that I wasn’t sure we were going to really start,” Hall said. “We came into the first mark with an advantage on all the boats in our own class, which is Class C. We knew we were quite close to some of the leading boats in very light air, so that was good for us.
“We’d like to thank the city, and we sure encourage the mayor to continue doing this. Right now, you have 50 knots of breeze and a beautiful day on Lake Champlain. It was a great turnout.”
Donald Brush, manning boat 1078, finished in the runner-up spot with a time of 2:27:25, while Williston, Vt., skipper Michael Quaid was third on Ice Cube, timing in at 2:27:54.
Bob Turnau (2:28:10) and Buffalo Theory of Winooski, Vt., and Fayston, Vt. sailor Al Hobart (2:28:29) completed the top five.
Larry Hinkley of Keeseville was crowned with the Rotary Cup, awarded to the Cruising division’s champion since the Sunrise Rotary Club began organizing the event in 1997.
Hinkley and the crew of Fullfraes finished at 2:17:35, while Bill Rodgers (2:20:27) of South Burlington, Vt., and Jeff Tobrocke (2:22:25) of Hinesburg, Vt., finished second and third, respectively.
Jocelyn Duteau (2:23:02) of Lacolle, Que., and William Whalen (2:23:49) of Essex Junction, Vt., completed the top five running order.
Albany’s Bob Denninger and the crew of PJ’s Hobie claimed the Multihull division championship, clocking in at 1:14:53.
Denninger was followed by Scotia’s Ted Feurer (1:16:32) and Jeff Chapman (1:16:48) on Space Station.
Hobie 20 skipper Christopher Anderson (1:17:59) and Dan Kisel (1:19:21) also earned top-five honors.
Dr. Kjell Dahlen, a longtime event organizer, was delighted with the day’s competition.
“I’m pleased with the turnout,” Dahlen said. “Last night’s forecast showed a light wind in the morning, so I’m sure a lot of people said, ‘I’m not going to race (Saturday).’ But they showed up, and I think they had a good time, too.”
Dahlen, though, was uncertain the day’s race was going to be completed.
“We thought that we might have to shorten the race with some of the divisions,” Dahlen said. “In fact, we did have to shorten it a bit with the Racing division. But we did end up running the full portions for the Cruising division and catamarans.
“Mother Nature finally cooperated, and she pushed things along. It’s a good way to showcase the area, and we were fortunate to get 70 boats in competition.”
