AUSABLE FORKS — The Barrhaven Broadway Blues and CPI Classics picked up victories Friday night during the opening round of the 51st-Annual AuSable Forks Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament at Billy Mitchell Memorial Field.
The Blues recorded a 4-0 decision over local team Gordon Oil, while the Classics, who are from Oswego, were 4-1 winners over Razzanno’s Trucking.
Jason Smith tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out nine to lead the Blues.
Derek Barber swung the big bats for Barrhaven with a single, double and two RBI, while Jeff Barber added a double and two runs scored.
Gordon’s was led defensively by Derek Hackett, who made three sparkling plays at third base.
Meanwhile, Greg Garrity fanned 11 and allowed just one hit in pitching the Classics to their victory over Razzanno’s.
The big blow in the contest was a three-run homer off the bat of CPI’s Josh Blakeley.
Local product Andrew Bombard was the losing pitcher.
Action continues today, with the first game scheduled for 8:30 a.m. The championship game will be Sunday.
