Junior Mariners get 2 pitching gems

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Junior Mariners made quick work of the Norfolk Junior Rovers on Sunday.

Bailey Cross and Tristan Archambault pitched five-inning no-hitters as the Mariners (24-6) recorded 10-0 and 11-1 victories.

Cross struck out eight and walked four, while Archambault fanned three and walked three in their five innings of work.

“It was pretty cool to get two no-hitters,” Mariners’ coach Gary Duquette said.

“Offensively, we’re hitting the ball well and that’s good because it’s getting close to playoff time. Hopefully, we’re going to peak at the right time. Once we were able to get a good lead, we worked on little things.”

“We still need to clean up the mental part of the game some. Every game, we make one or two mental mistakes.”

In the opener, the Mariners pushed across nine runs in the bottom of the second inning to take early control.

Brady Pennington powered Clinton County offensively with a single, double and four RBI, while Ryan Criss added a single, triple and RBI. Keller Kowalowski, Dan Hartman and Josh Juntunen each contributed a single, with Kowalowski driving in two runs.

In the second contest, Hartman went three-for-three, including two singles, a double and five RBI. Alex Follmer, Ryan Whalen and Cross chipped in with two hits apiece, with Follmer scoring four runs and Whalen driving in two. Pennington helped out with a triple and Criss added a double.

“Pennington and Criss are on fire offensively,” Duquette said. “And Hartman is back on track.

“The first pitcher we faced today was a left-hander and he was pretty good. We’ve had a little trouble against lefties this season, but not today.”
