AUSABLE FORKS — The AuSable Forks’ 52nd-Annual Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament concluded Sunday, with the New York Swashbucklers taking home the $2,000 first-place prize by defeating the Oshawa Rebels from Oshawa, Ont. in the championship game.
At the end of pool play, the Kanata Pirates, Ont., CPI/Heflins, Oswego, Rebels and the Swashbucklers, Staten Island, all advanced to the semifinals. The Rebels moved into the finals with a win over the Pirates, while the Swashbucklers defeated CPI/Heflins to set up the championship contest.
Lola Garcia (Billy Mitchell Memorial Most Valuable Pitcher) then tossed a one-hitter, with 10 strikeouts, to lead the Swashbucklers to a 3-0 win in the title contest.
Gil Saenz led the offense with two hits and won the Jim and Barb Booth Memorial Award for having eight hits in the tournament.
The weather held for the day, getting the tournament in with only a sprinkle an no delays under cloudy skies.

Award winners included: Doc Zacek Memorial Sportsmanship, Mike Blanchard, Kanata; George Goyette Most Valuable Catcher, Freddy Carmona, Swashbucklers; Jimmy and Bob Mousseau Most Valuable Player, Chris Bogash, Swashbucklers; Joe “Blackcat” Zeno Memorial Most RBI, Chris Bogash, Swashbucklers; and Coach Ned Hoey Best Defensive Play, Steve Mullady, Swashbucklers.
