Pressure mounts on CVBL leaders

PLATTSBURGH — The first-place Fourth Ward Cardinals had their hands full with the Adams Glass Dodgers on Sunday in Champlain Valley Baseball League play.

The Cardinals (13-5) and Dodgers (8-11) split their doubleheader at Lefty Wilson Field, with the Fourth Ward recording a 2-1 victory in the first contest and Adams Glass a 4-2 verdict in the second.

The outcome left the Cardinals a half game ahead of the Peabody’s Padres (11-4) in the league standings, but trailing in winning percentage .733 to .722.

Tom Neale and Kristian Sherman combined for the win in the opener, with Neale striking out five and allowing no runs in five innings to get the victory. Sherman struck out three over the final two innings to get the save while allowing a seventh-inning run. Luis Pepen Matos pitched well and fanned five in going the distance for the loss.

The Cardinals’ Joe Tolosky was the only player in the game to get two hits and his two-run double in the fifth inning was the margin of difference on the scoreboard.

Matt Letourneau’s run-scoring single in the seventh inning cut the Dodgers’ deficit to one run.

In the second game, Ethan King was strong as he went the route to pick up the mound victory, striking out six and allowing seven hits. Will Flynn, with Sherman taking over in the fifth, was the losing pitcher.

The Dodgers built up a 4-0 lead before the Cardinals made it interesting with two in the bottom of the seventh.

Marcus Lefebvre accounted for three of the Adams Glass hits, including a double and two runs scored.

C.J. Worley and Flynn led the Fourth Ward with two hits apiece, with Flynn driving in a run.
