COLCHESTER, Vt. — The Jeffords Steel Senior Babe Ruth baseball team, which is comprised of local players, lost a pair of ballgames at the Colchester Wooden Bat Tournament Saturday.
Jeffords Steel dropped a 4-0 decision to Colchester, Vt., before falling to Franklin County, Vt., 8-6.
“Quenton Barber was great on the mound in the first game, but we couldn’t get him any run support,” assistant coach Eric Bell said. “We had men in scoring position but couldn’t get the clutch hit we needed. We left nine men on base.
“Nate Emery swung a big bat for us all day. He legged out three doubles and was on base six of the seven times he batted.”
Barber pitched five innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and nine strikeouts. He also belted a double at the plate.
In the second of two contests, Franklin County scored six times in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead for keeps.
Shawn Courson tagged a single and a double, while Greg Manney registered two singles.
Nate Stanton was tagged with the loss on the mound.
Barber was an honorable-mention selection for the Most Outstanding Player award of the tournament.
Jeffords Steel will now play the Peabody’s Padres of the Champlain Valley Baseball League Tuesday.
