Sr. Mariners shut out; Jr. Mariners win two

SARATOGA — The good news is that the Clinton County Senior Mariners made it to the playoff round in the 18-team Cooper’s Cave Tournament.

The bad news is what happened after they got there.

A strong Senerchia Post #74, from Rhode Island, eliminated the Mariners from the event with a 14-0 victory on Saturday.

Clinton County finished the tournament with a 4-2 record and has a 19-7 overall record for the season.

Senerchia rapped out 10 hits in the contest. But the Mariners made their opponent look even better when four Clinton County pitchers combined for 16 walks and the team’s defense made three costly errors.

“The positive was that we made the playoffs in one of the most prestigious American Legion tournaments in New York State,” Mariners’ coach Matt Tolosky said. “We have not done that in a while.

“The negative is that we failed to execute in every aspect of the game.”

Senerchia pitcher Matt Murphy went the six innings for the victory as he allowed five hits, walked one and struck out nine.

Ryan Meyer, with Tanner Rascoe, Blake Altizer and Jack Tolosky all working in relief, took the loss.

Tolosky and Caleb Keysor paced the Mariners with two hits apiece, and Adam Goldfarb had the other hit.

Runners who got on base either by a walk or error ended up scoring 10 of the 14 runs for Senerchia. The Rhode Island team held a 1-0 lead after one inning and a 3-0 advantage after three. Senerchia, leading by an 8-0 score, tallied six runs in the top of the sixth to win by the run rule.

The Senerchia roster included Dante Baldelli, the younger brother of former Major League Baseball player Rocco Baldelli,

Going into Saturday’s contest, Mariner pitching had allowed only a combined 7 runs in five games.
