Jeffords Steel splits doubleheader with Ogdensburg

PLATTSBURGH — Jeffords Steel, a local Senior Babe Ruth baseball team, split with the Ogdensburg Maples in a doubleheader Thursday.

Brenton Larose no-hit Jeffords Steel as his team won the first game 3-0, and then the local club bounced back with a 5-3 victory.

Seventeen of the 18 outs Larose recorded were strikeouts, and he walked two batters.

“Brenton Larose threw a great first game with a fastball in the range of the mid 80s,” Jeffords Steel assistant coach Eric Bell said. “This was many of our players’ first game since their high school season, so that made it even tougher facing a Division I college freshman pitcher.”

Bryant Wentworth led Ogdensburg at the plate in the first game, rapping two hits. The Maples scored all three runs in the first inning.

Quenton Barber started for Jeffords Steel and was relieved in the fourth inning by Cameron Hurlburt.

The second gamed stayed scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when Jeffords Steel put up three runs — two courtesy of a single by Barber. He and Greg Manney both added an RBI in the next inning.

The Maples made a comeback attempt in the sixth, plating three runs. The defeat was just their second of the summer.

Manney pitched the whole game for Jeffords Steel, striking out four, walking one and allowing one earned run. He helped himself with two hits.

“Greg Manney was tremendous on the mound, pounding the strike zone all game,” Bell said. “We made a few errors in the final inning behind him, but he kept battling to get the win.”

Jeffords Steel will play again today in the Colchester Wood Bat Tournament.
