Cardinals extend CVBL lead

PERU — The competition was close between the Meron’s Expos and Adams Glass Dodgers in Champlain Valley Baseball League play on Sunday.

The Expos (9-5) squeezed out a 6-5 win in eight innings in the opener, while the Dodgers (7-7) won by the identical score in the second contest.

Paul Bruno’s run-scoring single drove in Cliff Conners with the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning as the Expos prevailed in the first game.

Andrew Tedford led the Expos offensively with three singles, while Bruno added a single and triple. Bill Davis tripled, Mark Passino doubled and Blake Gautreau and Conners had singles.

Mike Bergman picked up the pitching win in relief of Austin Medeiros, while Kevin Sousa took the loss in relief of Luis Pepen Matos.

Pepen Matos rapped two doubles and Marcus Lefebvre two singles for the Dodgers. Chris Vliege, Sousa, Ethan King, Matt Letourneau and Nick Demarais all chipped in with a single each. Demarais made an outstanding defensive play at second base.

In the second contest, Sousa’s single drove in Demarais with the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.

Sousa finished with three hits, while Demarais added a double and single. Kale Penetti doubled, while King, Letourneau and Lefebvre each chipped with a single. King struck out six in going the distance for the pitching win.

Davis led the Expos with two doubles, while Gautreau added a double and Mark Golden two singles. Josh Powers took the loss in relief of Bergman.

“We have a young team and the players are realizing how much of a grind it is,” Adams Glass coach John Demarais said. “They’re fighting hard. We didn’t get great starting pitching today, but we were efficient on defense and on offense.

“Ethan wasn’t at his best, but he showed a lot of composure and battled.”
