PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Senior Mariners took the lead with a six-run third inning and went on to defeat Essex Post #91 11-5 in an American Legion baseball game Wednesday at Lefty Wilson Field.
“The third inning put us ahead, and they came back the very next inning to make it 6-5,” Mariners assistant coach Craig Worley said. “That’s when Andy Kneussle came in and pretty much shut the doors on them. We had a few insurance runs after that.”
Essex led 3-0 after the top of the third and scored its last two runs in the fourth. Clinton County (7-2) gave itself some breathing room by plating three runs in the bottom of the fourth and added two more in the sixth.
Kneussle, who earned the win, relieved starter Jack Tolosky in the fourth inning. Essex used four different pitchers, and they combined to allow nine hits. Mitch Cunningham led the Mariners with two hits and two RBI, while Conor Casey had two hits and one RBI. Robby Knowles also hit a pair of singles. Tanner Rascoe drew four walks and scored two runs.
“They were a good opponent. They definitely put the bat on the ball,” Worley said. “We played very well in the field. It was a good game to get ready for our tournament this weekend.”
The Mariners host the three-day Mehan/Turner Memorial Tournament and will open with a 6 p.m. game Friday against Malone.
