CVBL leaders maintain slim lead

PLATTSBURGH — The Fourth Ward Cardinals held on to their slim lead in the Champlain Valley Baseball League standings Sunday by splitting two close games with the Meron’s Expos.

The Cardinals (8-3) recorded a 2-1 win in the opener and the Expos (8-4) prevailed by a 5-3 score in eight innings in the nightcap.

In the first game, Tom Neale went six innings to get the win and Alex LaFountain the seventh for the save. Billy Davis went the distance in taking the setback as the two teams combined for only seven hits in the contest.

The Cardinals scored both their runs in the first inning when Will Flynn singled, Brian Latulipe walked, Ben Weightman singled in a run and Joe Tolosky hit into a fielder’s choice for the second run.

Meron’s threatened in the seventh when it scored one run to cut the deficit in half before the Fourth Ward was able to get out of further trouble.

Davis had a double and single at the plate for the Expos.

In the second contest, the Expos broke a 3-all tie in the eighth when Davis hit a sacrifice fly and Chris Roenbeck a RBI single.

Roenbeck also had a RBI single in the seventh to give Meron’s a 3-2 lead, but the Cardinals tied it in the home half when Latulipe singled and later scored on Tolosky’s hit.

Jordan Woods, Roenbeck, Mike Bordeau, Logan Recor and Paul Bruno rapped out two hits apiece for the Expos. Davis, who took over for starter Mike Bergman in the seventh inning, picked up the win.

Tolosky and Eric Dwyer led the Cardinals with two hits each. Flynn started on the mound for the Fourth Ward and Eric Rock took over in the seventh and took the loss.
