Kamm Cassidy sparks Adirondacks past Newport

LAKE PLACID — Kamm Cassidy’s two-RBI single in the fifth inning sparked Lake Placid at the plate, helping the Adirondacks to a 9-5 defeat of Newport, Vt., in the 3rd Annual Adirondacks Legion Baseball Tournament Saturday.

Lake Placid (1-1) scored on five occasions in the frame.

“They kind of threw the ball around a little bit, especially when it started to get wet,” Adirondacks coach Rik Cassidy said. “We’d get a hit or a walk and then steal a base. We ended up having a huge inning.”

Lake Placid’s Ryan Damp, who got the start on the hill, was replaced by Kolby Pertak with one out in the seventh.

But Newport was able to get within striking distance, scoring four times.

“Ryan got to the point where I thought he was getting tired, so I took him out,” Rik Cassidy said.

“I don’t think Kolby warmed up properly, and he couldn’t find the plate at first. But he settled down to strike out the last two batters.”

Noah Mohr and Connor Preston each went 2-for-3 in the ballgame, while Luke Carpenter was 2-for-4.

Mohr and Preston accounted for triples.

The Adirondacks will resume round-robin play in the wooden-bat tournament with three games today.

Lake Placid will host the Montréal Prospects at 10:30 a.m., the Norwood Rovers at 1:30 p.m. and Newport, Vt., once again at 4:30 p.m.
