Senior Mariners split in Border Wars

MALONE — The Clinton County Senior Mariners won one and lost one during Saturday’s action in the Border Wars Wooden Bat Tournament hosted by Malone Post #219.

The Mariners (3-2) recorded a 6-0 victory over the Montreal Titans in their first game of the day before dropping a 12-5 decision to the Montreal Orioles.

Clinton County plays the Montreal Rockies today at 9 a.m. at the Franklin Academy High School field. The remainder of the Mariners’ tournament schedule will depend on how they do against the Rockies.

Up until the championship contest, all games are six innings in regulation.

Against the Titans, Jeremy Barber went the distance for the shutout as he allowed just a second-inning single, struck out 13 and walked three.

Offensively, Mitchell Cunningham swung the big bat for the Mariners, going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Brandon Buksa added a double, while Conor Casey, Ryan Meyer, Andy Kneussle and Caleb Keysor added singles. Jack Tolosky, Casey and Meyer also drove in runs.

It was a different story, however, against the Orioles, who scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never lost their lead.

The Orioles rapped 10 hits in all and scored at least a run in every inning except for the fourth.

The Mariners also finished with 10 hits, with Tolosky going 3-for-3 to lead the way. Keysor added two hits, while Tanner Rascoe added a triple. Buksa, Blake Altizer, Meyer and Barber added singles. Buksa, Keysor, Rascoe, Altizer and Barber drove in the runs for the Mariners.

Casey started on the mound for the Mariners and took the loss, with Brandon Rabideau taking over in the third inning.
