PLATTSBURGH —With the score knotted after three quarters, top-ranked Cortland scored five goals in the fourth to defeat the No. 18 Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team, 15-12, in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener at the Field House Lacrosse Complex.
It was a bit of a slow start Saturday afternoon as Cortland outscored Plattsburgh State, 5-1, through the first 15 minutes. Joe Slavik opened the scoring for the Red Dragons at 12:09, followed by Billy Davis at 11:13 to put Cortland up 2-0.
Five seconds later, Plattsburgh State’s Joey Kramer cut the deficit in half but Cortland rattled off the next three goals to give the Red Dragons a four-goal lead after the first quarter.
A two-minute unreleasable penalty on Cortland at the 12:55 mark of the second quarter created an opportunity for the Cardinals to jump back into the game. Back-to-back man-up goals from Kramer and Tom Duggan brought the Cardinals within two and brought life to the Plattsburgh State sidelines. The Cardinals continued to carry the momentum at the 10:45 mark when an unassisted effort by Tim Lawrence made it a one-goal game.
Cortland’s Matt Rakoczy scored the next two, stretching the Red Dragons’ lead to three but three straight goals from Nick Travers, Lawrence and Kramer evened the scored at 7-all.
The two teams traded goals one more time before the end of the quarter, closing out the half with the score tied at 8-8.
After two more goals for each side in the third, Patrick Brown gave Cortland another lead at 13:22 of the fourth. The lead was again a short-lived one as Kramer scored his fourth of the afternoon six seconds later to tie it up again.
With the Cardinals unable to gain a lead, the Red Dragons scored the next four to break the game up and take a 15-11 lead. Brendan Damm added an unassisted goal for Plattsburgh State with 1:12 remaining to round out the scoring.
