Palandrani, Campbell lead CVAC softball All-Stars

PLATTSBURGH — Eighteen student-athletes from 11 area schools were selected as 2013 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference All-Stars in Division I and Division II softball.

Ticonderoga’s Katie Palandrani was named Player of the Year, while Kourtnie Campbell of Saranac was recognized as the Pitcher of the Year.

Saranac coach Sam Campbell and Donna Moody of Lake Placid were awarded Co-Coaches of the Year.

Northeastern Clinton was the recipient of the Ray Holmes Sportsmanship Award.

The All-Stars were selected by the CVAC coaches.

Player of the Year

Katie Palandrani, Ticonderoga- A catcher and four-year starter on the varsity team, Palandrani was an excellent all-around athlete, batting .502 for the Sentinels. Her walk-off double to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning helped Ticonderoga claim the Section VII Class C softball title over Lake Placid, 8-7. Palandrani did not allow many pass balls, and she held runners on base with her arm. She was a leader and role model for many of the younger players.

Pitcher of the Year

Kourtnie Campbell, Saranac- Campbell was the engine that drove the Chiefs. In the circle, she was 12-3, losing just one league game. In 100.1 innings of work, she allowed 64 hits and 17 earned runs while striking out 129 batters and compiling a 1.19 ERA. Campbell was also Saranac’s leader at the plate with a .515 batting average and a team-high 34 hits, including six doubles and four triples.

Co-Coaches of the Year

Sam Campbell, Saranac- In his first season as head coach of the Chiefs, Campbell led Saranac to its second consecutive Class B championship. Compiling a 16-5 record, the Chiefs fell to top-ranked Chatham in the NYSPHSAA quarterfinals, 8-3.

Donna Moody, Lake Placid- Moody helped guide the Blue Bombers to a Section VII Class C championship game appearance. Lake Placid finished the spring at 11-6 overall and 9-5 in CVAC play.
