Mike Bergman and David Davidson of CR Tunes Mudhens combine on a one-hitter and then Davidson and Steve Yaeger team up on a no-hitter in a CVBL sweep of Pulsifer’s Logging.

Lake Placid’s Bruce Sawyer wins the first 20-lap feature for 358 modifieds and then runs second in the next at Adirondack International Speedway in New Bremen.

Chazy’s Don Jerry, Willsboro’s Kristen Hotaling and Ticonderoga’s William LaFrance all land species winners in the annual LCI Fishing Derby.

Chateaugay’s Kevin O’Neill is named head coach of the NBA Toronto Raptors.

Terry Aubin, Jr., Joey Rice, Stephen Weightman, Rob Knowlton and Mark Finley of Troop B win the gold medal in team trap handicap at the New York State Police & Fire Olympics.

Freshman David Waldron is named MVP of the Plattsburgh State Cardinals after batting .365 and posting a 2.67 earned-run average. Mike Bergman is selected the Most Outstanding Pitcher and Cliff Conners, the Most Improved.

20 YEARS AGO (1993)

Peru’s Glenn Arnold, who batted .458 and compiled a 7-1 pitching record, is named Most Valuable Player in CVAC baseball while Larry Ewald, who led the Indians to the Div. I and Section VII Class B titles, is Coach of the Year.

Northern Adirondack’s Ernie Wheeler is named Coach of the Year in CVAC tennis. Chris Peets, Steve LeClaire, Ben Gooley and Benji DeCoste of NCCS are first-team selections, along with Justin Hoskins of Peru and Nate Lynch and Dan Locklin of Beekmantown. The girls’ stars include Erica and Tara Butler and Nicole Miller of Saranac; Erin Sprague of NAC, and Elizabeth Ward, Laura Tessoriere and Katie Duffany of PHS.

Michel Hebert and Liz Pearl win the 7th-Annual Plattsburgh YMCA Min-Tri while Sarah Sabourin, Damien Girardi and Matt Goette take the team title.

25 YEARS AGO (1988)

Larry Ewald becomes the fourth football coach at Peru, succeeding Leon Angevine, Mike Beauvais and Tony Papero.

Joe Staves is named the first full-time Director of Physical Education for the Plattsburgh City School District.

Joe Church, 8, of Plattsburgh wins the Junior Class grand prize in the LCI Fishing Derby and receives a boat, motor and trailer.

Altona native Jeffrey Mitchell is a member of the U.N. Command Kings ice hockey team that plays Korean universities.

Ellenburg’s Francis McNeil takes both Amateur features at Airborne Raceway, giving him four firsts on the season.

30 YEARS AGO (1983)

Sue Neyenhouse raps out 5 hits and JoAnn Dion and Lori Roppelt chip in with 4 each as the American League crushes the Nationals 27-8 in the City Women’s Softball League All-Star Game. Angela Lashway, Judy Bassett and Diane Smith each get 2 hits for the Nationals.

Mike Howard wins the Saranac Lake Road Runners’ 10K race in 36:44. Bill Amberman, Mike McKillip and Clark Knight are the next 3 finishers.

Stan Riggs is named the third athletic director at Peru, taking over from Rich Rollins, who succeeded Tony Papero.

Grant McAllister (4th), Larry Jeffords (5th) and Robert Weatherwax (7th) are the top local runners in the 12th-Annual Champlain Valley Marathon, won by Burlington’s Tony Bates in a record time of 2:27:27.

40 YEARS AGO (1973)

Former MAI and Penn State football standout Gregg Ducatte returns to MAI to serve as assistant to head coach Frank Sterrett.

Rob Carpenter, 15, pitches back-to-back no-hitters in City Babe Ruth League play.

Russ Eddy, Don Miller, John Mero, George Cote, Bernie Miller and Tom Bouyea are honored as Plattsburgh Elks Club bowling champions for 1972-73.

50 YEARS AGO (1963)

Bob Bruno reels off his third straight feature victory at Airborne Park while Dick Nephew, in only the second time out in his new car, escapes serious injury after flipping and rolling over four times.

Morrisonville’s Mike Rock strikes out 16 and John Rock raps out 3 hits in a 9-1 victory over Keeseville in County Babe Ruth play.

Dick Sabourin pitches a 3-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Merkel’s whips The Elks 12-1 in City Babe Ruth.

John Bailey pitches a one-hitter as Dannemora drills South Plattsburgh 14-1 in County Little League action.

60 YEARS AGO (1953)

Jake Tolosky doubles and scores on Red Dubray’s single in the bottom of the ninth to lift Lyon Mountain to a 7-6 win over AuSable Forks and into a first-place tie with idle Saranac Lake in the Champlain Valley League.

Tarzan Zorra defeats Bobo Brazil in professional wrestling before 3,000 at Bailey Avenue Park.

Al Pajonas pounds out 3 hits, including a 2-run homer, to lead Morrisonville over Mineville 14-9 in CVL baseball. Is Baker, Les Rock and Tom Cronin also have 3 hits apiece.

70 YEARS AGO (1943)

Beauchemin strikes out 14 and Coffey, McMillan and O’Hara each collect 2 hits as St. John’s completes a sweep of its best-of-3 championship series with Rouses Point, giving the Irish their first North Country Interscholastic League baseball title.

Nick Corodimas slugs a home run in the sixth inning to lift Aaron Scheier’s Cardinals to a 9-7 win over Ward II in City Softball League play.
