The Patriots began the game strong, winning the first set 25-13. The Red Raiders made it more of a competitive match in the second set, but AuSable Valley was still able to get the 25-19 victory. The Patriots officially knocked out Massena in the third and final set of the match, 25-14.
Patriots coach Sandra Hoey received excellent performances from her entire squad, as seven players were able to contribute statistically.
“We spread our offense around, a lot of different hitters mixing up hard swings to shots to the middle. We gave them a lot of different looks,” Hoey said. “We had a complete team effort with a full team for the first time (this season).”
Marissa O’Neill led the Patriots in points with 11 and also recorded two aces, six kills, four digs and nine assists in the match. Teammate Lindsay Brown followed O’Neill in points with 10 and also finished the day with four aces, five kills, seven digs and one block.
Miranda Sheffer also had a productive day for AuSable Valley, finishing with four points, two aces, seven kills, nine digs and eight assists. Noelle Miller had nine digs for the Patriots, along with seven kills, three aces and five points.
“Great team effort,” Hoey said. “We stay united and that’s what’s keeping us victorious, we also have strong fan support behind us — the fans are a huge part.”
AuSable Valley’s next opponent is Section II’s Voorheesville, an opponent Hoey and her team is quite familiar with.
“It’s Voorheesville’s fourth trip to state finals. They are a very veteran team,” Hoey said. “We faced them the past four years, (and I think we) finally have the experience and talent to beat them this year.”
