Chateaugay girls, boys move on in Section X soccer playoffs

POTSDAM — The top-seeded Chateaugay girls opened the Section X Class D Tournament on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Madrid-Waddington in quarterfinal play.

Hannah Cook scored two goals for the Bulldogs (16-0-1), who will play fourth-seeded Lisbon at 6:45 p.m. on Monday in the semifinals at Potsdam High School.

Cook scored at 13:00 of the first half to give Chateaugay a 1-0 lead at the half.

The Bulldogs then tallied two more goals after intermission, with Alicia Cook scoring at 19:16 and Hannah Cook at 31:45.

Kennedy Boyea recorded the shutout with two saves and Arianna Ramsey stopped 11 shots for the Yellowjackets, who dropped 6-0 and 3-0 decisions to Chateaugay during the regular season,

Abby Barnes and Courtney Yando played well on defense for the Bulldogs on Saturday, while Chateaugay’s reserve halfbacks were also a factor.

“Madrid-Waddington played well — it was a good game for us to open up sectional play.” Chateaugay coach Steve Lang said. “The midfielders on both teams played well, including Hannah Cook for us. In addition to scoring two goals, she was the leader for us at midfield.”

MASSENA — After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs tallied two goals in the second stanza to move past the Knights in Section X Class D boys’ soccer quarterfinal soccer.

Tyler Jones and Seth Young each found the back of the net in the second half to lead Chateaugay (13-3-1) to a victory and into Tuesday’s semifinal matchup with the winner of the Harrisville/Edwards Knox game.

The game will take place at 5 p.m. at Potsdam High School.

“I am real pleased,” Bulldogs coach Bob Ouimet said. “We got stronger as the game went on and sort of wore them down. I think we had the advantage for most of the second half.

“(Lisbon) had the leading scorer in Section X and we did a real good job defensively shutting him down.”

Chad Stalter had a pair of assists in the game for Chateaugay. Josh Trombley turned away five shots for th shutout.
