Moriah, Chazy land in Class D championship

CHAZY — Each fall, the Chazy girls’ soccer names change.

The results, however, remain a constant.

The seventh-ranked Eagles (14-2-1) will try for their 10th Section VII Class D championship in 12 years after a 3-0 semifinal defeat of Minerva/Newcomb Tuesday.

Lindsey Gilmore, an eighth grader for Karin Sherman’s team, opened the game’s scoring with 23:34 gone in the first half. Rachel Pombrio was credited with an assist on the play.

“Lindsey Gilmore came off the bench and put the ball in the net,” Sherman said. “It took us awhile (to get going) and not playing for 12 days showed.”

Pombrio extended Chazy’s differential to two goals with a monumental tally right before the halftime break. The score occurred with just four seconds showing on the clock at George Brendler Field. Kinnan Latremore was credited with the helper.

Latremore, though, wasn’t done on the score sheet.

Taking a one-time feed from Hannah Laurin, Latremore sent home a tally at 30:11 of the final frame to make it 3-0.

“Kinnan Latremore and Rachel Pombrio played consistent and strong, combining for two goals,” Sherman said. “Defensively, Olivia Blais and Cailee LaPorte played strong.”

Logan Baker picked up the shutout in net, accumulating four saves in the three-goal win. The shutout marked her seventh on the year. Astasia Myler was heavily contested throughout the course of the match, racking up 25 saves.

“Their goalie, Astasia Myler, had great hands and saved many shots,” Sherman said.

The Eagles will face Moriah, a 6-0 winner over Westport in the second of two semifinal games, at Plattsburgh High for 5 p.m. Saturday.

Chazy is seeking to avenge last year’s championship loss to Elizabethtown-Lewis, which ended the Eagles’ title streak at seven.
