Chazy, E'town-Lewis to clash for 'D' title

CHAZY — The Chazy boys’ soccer team is no stranger to the Section VII Class D championship game.

The Eagles (14-1-3), who received goal contributions from Alec LaPierre, Hayden Guay and Dylan Garrow, advanced to the sectional finals for the twelfth consecutive year with a 3-1 win over Schroon Lake Monday.

“I thought we played well from beginning to end,” Chazy coach Rob McAuliffe said. “We generated a lot of chances. The only disappointment — we really should’ve finished on a number of scoring opportunities.”

LaPierre helped the second-ranked Eagles get on the board with just 4:31 elapsed in the first half. Dylan Doran was credited with an assist on the play.

“We started the game off well,” McAuliffe said. “Alec scored a great goal on a header. Anytime you get a big goal (early), it’s a good way to get things started.”

Guay extended Chazy’s advantage to 2-0 after connecting on a one-time feed from Alex Rabideau at 31:24.

The Wildcats (12-2-1) were able to put one on the scoreboard with just 13 seconds remaining in the first half. Jordan Finnerty connected on a pass from Bobby Rose to cut the Eagles’ lead to one.

“We gave up an unneeded foul at midfield,” McAuliffe said. “They served the ball in the box and capitalized. Schroon Lake defended well and stayed in the game. They made things difficult for us. We were the better team throughout the game, but they came ready to play (Monday).”

The game remained 2-1 until the 34:31 mark when Garrow added an insurance goal on Rabideau’s second helper of the match.

“We really didn’t put a lot of pressure on, which kept the game close,” McAuliffe said. “Their goalie made some key saves, and they were organized in the back. Fortunately, Garrow was able to get a goal at the end to kind of seal it.”
